
Significance
Gongar Dundia (Eryngium foetidum, “spiny coriander”) is a valuable aromatic culinary herb of Bodoland containing 0.1–0.95% essential oil, with an aroma deeper and stronger than coriander. It is a prized substitute for coriander, rich in iron, carotene, riboflavin, calcium and vitamins.
History & Cultural Context
Widely used for its unique pungent aroma and essential oil, Gongar Dundia is an important culinary spice for garnishing, marinating, flavouring and seasoning soups, curries, chutneys, sauces, noodles, snacks, salads and meat dishes. Its essential oil has high value in international trade.
Process & Techniques
Grown from seed, the seedlings are ready to transplant 45–50 days after sowing; the smooth, soft leaves are harvested and used fresh or to preserve and flavour food.
Traditional Knowledge
Traditional knowledge of the plant supports its use in food and medicine — it is used to treat fever, diabetes, hypertension, colds, digestive ailments and more, with documented antibacterial, antioxidant, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activity.
